Summer Time and the Mathing Comes Easy
A Message from Our Founder
The Queen Mather
Deborah Peart Crayton, nicknamed the Queen Mather because of her passion for making mathematics accessible for all, strives to build a community of competent and confident Readers, Writers, and Mathers.
June marks the beginning of summer, a time to shift gears, slow down, and make plans to recharge. Whether you choose a staycation, road trip, beach get-away, or something else, make sure you keep the math alive. When kids see math in everyday life, at the pool, on a hike, or in the kitchen, they build confidence and curiosity that lasts long after summer ends.
Keeping Math Alive All Summer Long
Summer math doesn’t need worksheets. It’s about noticing, wondering, and playing with numbers, shapes, and patterns in the world around us. Even while relaxing, there are simple, joyful ways to keep math thinking alive without it feeling like work. Math is everywhere: in nature, in cooking, in games, in travel, and in the rhythms of everyday life.
This summer you might enjoy:
Summer Patterns: Noticing patterns in leaves, shells, or clouds
Measurement Math: Estimating and measuring distances on walks or road trips
Mathy Cooking: Using measuring cups, fractions, and counting while making lemonade, fruit salad, or summer snacks
Travel Math: Counting license plates, estimating travel time, or tracking miles on a road trip.
Shape Hunts: Exploring shapes in buildings, gardens, or playgrounds
Summer Data: counting steps, tracking weather, or surveying favorite activities
Water Balloon Math: comparing sizes, estimating tossing distances, or creating simple target‑throwing challenges
These small moments keep mathematical thinking playful and connected to the world.
