Welcome to a New School Year: A Fresh Start, A New Community of Mathers!
A Message from Our Founder
The Queen Mather
Deborah Peart Crayton, nicknamed the Queen Mather because of her passion for making mathematics accessible for all, strives to build a community of competent and confident Readers, Writers, and Mathers.
Labor Day always marked the end of summer for children in the New York Tri- State area. It was my favorite time of year as a student and as a teacher. Back-to-School shopping meant a few new outfits and lots of supplies. The evenings were a little cooler and the leaves started to change colors. Some people tried to hold onto summer for as long as they could, wearing shorts well into October, but not me. I loved getting out sweaters and planning outfits that would involve corduroy and cute boots.
There was something really special about the start of a new season, especially Back-to-School season. Even now, as I see rows of bright notebooks and folders, boxes of crayons, markers, and pencils, and supply lists in hand as I shop, I’m reminded that a new school year brings new possibilities. Even though summer is in the rear view, the excitement of meeting a new group of learners never fades. Whether you are in classrooms everyday or working with adult learners, it is refreshing to prepare to build a new community of learners.
As we begin this year, remember that the classroom becomes powerful when students see it as their space, not just ours. Instead of filling every wall and corner, leave room for students to bring their stories, their strengths, and their whole selves. Build a community together with shared agreements instead of your rules. Include daily affirmations to set a tone of possibility and create a culture where belonging is not an afterthought but a foundation for all. When students feel safe, seen, and valued, learning becomes joyful.
This year, pause and ask: How can I invite students into a community we create together? Establish routines that remind them they are supported, capable, and growing every day. Celebrate small wins. Laugh often. And most importantly, have fun. The truth is our enthusiasm and joy can be some of the most powerful teaching tools we have.
Wishing you a school year filled with connection, curiosity, and endless moments of discovery.
