Every Student Belongs in the Mather Community!

    A Message from Our Founder

    The Queen Mather

Deborah Peart Crayton, nicknamed the Queen Mather because of her passion for making mathematics accessible for all, strives to build a community of competent and confident Readers, Writers, and Mathers.

I’ve lived in places where the leaves paint the landscape in vibrant shades of gold, orange, and crimson as autumn settles in. The world around us begins to transform almost suddenly. I love when the mornings greet us with a chill, but the day warms just enough to remind us summer is leaving but it’s not winter yet. Fall reminds us that growth often comes through change.

By this time of year, classroom routines are in place, students are already changing and growing, and school days have a rhythm that is starting to feel familiar. The students sitting in our classrooms today are developing beliefs that may stay with them for years. They are deciding whether the math community is a place where they can thrive, contribute, and belong. It is our job to invite them in!

When students feel like outsiders in math class, they often disengage before they can experience success. But when they feel welcomed into a community of learners, they become more willing to take risks, share their thinking, and persevere through productive struggle.

Students don't arrive as "math people" or "not math people." They arrive as thinkers, problem-solvers, pattern seekers, and sense makers. They arrive as Mathers!

This fall, let’s be intentional about opening the doors wider. Let's intentionally nurture positive math identities by celebrating thinking over speed, valuing multiple strategies, and making space for every voice. Because when students believe they belong in the math community, they begin to see themselves as Mathers.

    Reflection Question for Educators:

What is one intentional move you can make this week to help every student in your classroom feel seen, valued, and connected as a member of your math community?
