Bridging the Gap Between Literacy and Mathematics
Deborah Peart Crayton, My Mathematical Mind CEO, 2021
I founded My Mathematical Mind to support parents, teachers, and leaders with the challenge of developing in their students positive math identities. In my more than 30 years of teaching elementary age students, I have seen the effects of math shame, where students are called out for having the wrong answers, or for not working fast enough. These practices can cause trauma for students, which lead to life-long battles with math anxiety. We want all students to know they are mathers.
The elementary school years are a critical time for students to learn math in an environment where it is safe to share their developing thinking, collaborate with their peers, ask their questions as they come, and experience the joy of math.
I want to help you cultivate and nurture these positive experiences for students, which will ultimately help you reach the achievement goals you have set for your district, school site, or classroom.
A few of the many ways we can work together: building math content knowledge, learning creative ways to minimize math anxiety, recognizing the brilliance in all students, and helping students become confident critical thinkers and lifelong mathers.
